HD's Slim & 72

Harley-Davidson unveiled 2 new motorcycles Tuesday, the Seventy-Two and the  Softail Slim.

Harley officials describe the 72 this way: "In creating the Seventy-Two, we were also inspired by the vibe of the early chopper era".

"Those bikes were colorful and chromed, but also narrow and stripped down to the essentials. You look at period examples and they are almost as simple as a bicycle."

"It’s a custom style that’s very particular to America and that California scene".

From its hard candy, red flake paint and mini-ape hangers, to its narrow whitewall tires, the 72 is a respectful nod to that era. Wow, it's as if Harley is finally listening to it's customers. 

As for the Slim, it has a trimmed front fender, Hollywood bars and a narrow rear end. Slim and trim indeed.

Harley says: "It has iconic style that recalls classic custom bobbers of the 1950s".

It's simply a Softail on a diet. Hopefully it also comes with a slimmed down price tag.

Issue #21 Greasy Kulture Magazine is in stores (or in my case soon to be in the mail and on the way) now.

Tokyo Motorcycle Show Cancelled

The 2011 Tokyo Motorcycle Show has been cancelled.

It really comes as no surprise, in the wake
of the devastation left behind by the earthquake
and tsunami.

The show was scheduled for March 25-27.

However, the Japanese GP has been rescheduled
from April 24 to October 2.

Hopefully sunny days will return to the land of the
rising sun.

GaugeFace for DickFaces

This could be one of the gayest things I've seen in years! Woe, woe hold on there, don't get yer panties in a bunch. I have no probs if you own a Harley-Davidson or an iPhone... just don't combine the two, if you do it's gay.

This is what you get. A phone (thanks to a downloadable app) that acts as a speedometer, tach, engine temperature gauge, signal indicators and lets you know what gear you're in. Yep gay!

It's called the GaugeFace app. The unit plugs into the ECU and the cost of the app and connectors is about $250 Canadian. Still gay!

It'll work on all Harley's since roughly 2001, with EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) based Delphi ECU's. Delphi or I'd say it's... gay!

Radical Vintage Front End

Wow! Imagine pullin' up beside this bitchn' scoot at a stop light. Not only is that Ol' Panhead a killer bike with it's gleaming chrome and copper accents, that front end is drop dead, kick-a$$, motha f#ckn' gorgeous!

The crazy custom bike builders at Rooster Custom Cycles (in collaboration with Perse Performance) is about to release this "back-in-the-day" classic suspension with some modern updates.

Aside from the chrome, the first thing that catches your eye is that shock.

Rooster enlisted the engineering department at Penske Motor Sports to hook em' up with a shock for the vintage front end that would allow for a varying degree of riding styles and feels.

And as expected... this back-to-the-future front end will be available to suit any frame configuration.

And you know I wouldn't mention it in the Motörheadster Blog, unless there was a bolt on kit for Sportster models. But it ain't cheap!

The polished stainless steel front end w/ headlight, brake mount and fender straps, just over $5000. If you want it powder coated DOM tube w/ stainless steel components, headlight, brake mount and fender straps, just over $4,000. That front end will put a big hole in your rear end where your wallet sits.

A Sportster Cafe

It's about time some one offered up a kit like this.

Check it, a Sportster Cafe frame kit with available tank, seat and all the extras you'll need to mock-up you're own knee-scraping cafe bad boy. Awesome!

The fine craftsmen/women at J.W. Motorcycles spent months planning and designing the frame kits for the solid mount Harley Evo Engine.

The frames are made from T45 tubing. The frame (and what you see pictured above) weigh in at 14.75 kg. The headstock is machined to accept Sportster yokes using taper bearings and the rake is 26 degrees.

How about this for foresight. One of the options available is an aluminium oil tank/battery box. OK, that's f#ckin' killer. Why? Well if you've ever tried to build a scoot from the ground-up... well there are no "options" available. And in this application, it's a necessity!

For those with a belt drive no problem. Or if you want to convert to a sprocket, well it'll allow you to use any number of rear wheels. Although I'm not sure you'd want to go much wider than 180mm?

You have a choice of three tanks. A 5 gallon manx, 3.5 gallon manx or the sprint (shown above). You can also see the headstock and Sporty yoke/tree in this pic.

You can also choose between two different fibreglass seat units.

The Straight Goods

I noticed this email in my in-box from the fine folks at Nash Motorcycles Co.



These Straight Lewis Pipes were made for Nash by SickPipes. I've featured some of their work before refer to: Pipes & Bars.



Here's a couple more pics from the NMC website. Tyler with SikPipes, takes Nash's designes and hand makes em' to their specs out of 16 gauge tig welded mandrel bent steel.



Cost $297. These Straight Lewis Pipes, can be made to fit 84-99 Evos, 2000-up Twincams, 57-85 Ironheads, or 86-up Sportsters.

World's Fastest Woman (on a motorcycle)

Her name is Leslie Poterfield, and she is officially the Fastest Woman in the World on a Motorcycle.

Porterfield rode her 2002, 2000cc Turbo-charged Suzuki Hayabusa to a new record speed of 232.522 mph. She set the record at the BUB Speed Trials at the Bonneville Salt Flats. The folks at the Guinness Book of World Records say that's cool with them.

The previous record was set by motocross rider and stunt woman, Marcia Holley (pictured above). Holley’s record of 229.361 was set with a single engine streamliner Kawasaki motorcycle in 1978.

This is Porterfield without all her riding gear and leathers. Seeing her, immediately evokes images, of the Airbourne song: 'Blonde, Bad & Beautiful'! She's all that!

Here's a quote from Leslie I lifted from a local website.

“I couldn’t believe it when they called,” says Porterfield from her busy Dallas, Texas motorcycle dealership. “It’s takes awhile after filing the paper work with the FIM (International Federation of Motorcycling) to get the record certificate, and then with Guinness – this has been going on for a while and when they called I was just thrilled.”

Here she is working on her bike and getting ready for her next goal. Leslie wants to be the fastest person in the world on a motorcycle.

Porterfield is heading to El Mirage, California in May 2010 and then she's off to the Utah Salt Flats in August in hopes of setting a new world record.

Leslie owns a bike dealership in Texas called High Five Cycles. She sells used bikes and has a full service shop and parts department.
